Sanjeewa Samarakoon is the Chief Operating Officer and an Executive Director of Bank of Ceylon (UK) Limited. He assumed duties as Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO on 22 May 2023 and was appointed to the Board of Directors on 23 October 2023. With over 18 years of experience in the banking and financial services sector, he brings strong expertise in operations management, governance, and regulatory compliance.

Career guidelines

As an FCA/PRA-approved SMF24 function holder, Mr. Samarakoon leads the Bank’s operational strategy, overseeing IT, human resources, outsourcing arrangements, and board governance. He plays a vital role in strengthening the Bank’s operational resilience and aligning business practices with UK regulatory standards.

Prior to his UK assignment, Mr. Samarakoon held senior managerial positions at the Bank of Ceylon in Sri Lanka and India, covering offshore banking, credit, trade finance, and branch operations.

He is academically engaged and currently pursuing an MPhil in Economics, focusing on taxation and GDP growth. He has also served as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Peradeniya and was a member of the Board of Study in Mathematics at the Postgraduate Institute of Science from 2020 to 2023.

He holds an MBA (with research), a BA (Hons) in Economics, and is a Lifetime Associate Member of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka.
