Carey Leonard

Carey spent 33 years at Standard Chartered Bank, working in the bank’s key markets of Asia, the Middle East and Africa. His core skillset in commercial banking covers leadership, governance, risk management, strategy and workouts. A member of the bank’s Business Leadership Team from 2002 to 2006, he was Country Chief Executive in Sri Lanka, Nigeria and South Africa from 1995 to 2004. He led the Bank’s successful return to Nigeria, now it’s largest franchise in Africa. In South Africa he managed the transition of the bank’s Representative Office to a Wholesale Bank. In 1992 in Hong Kong, he established the Bank’s first corporate banking specialised industry unit, Textiles and Garments, with assets in 1994 of over USD1.5 billion and profits in excess of USD20 million.

He was an Independent Non-Executive Director of Intercontinental Bank UK plc, subsequently Diamond Bank (UK) Plc and then CommonwealthTrade Bank Plc from 2010 to 2020.

Carey was until December 2024 Trustee and Treasurer of Malvern College, Chairman of its preparatory school, The Downs Malvern and Malvern College International Limited, which comprises franchise schools in China, Hong Kong, Japan and Egypt.

He recently retired as a Magistrate on the Worcestershire Bench following appointment in 2007 and progressing to become a Presiding Justice.
